Under Windows XP, with Catalyst 5.5 installed, the Displays tab is showing
no monitors attached when one is attached and works quite well at that. I
tried to install a custom Monitor driver under Windows XP, and that
installed fine, but it doesn't change the result. On the Catalyst Displays
tab, all video output devices show with a red X and I am therefore not able
to configure the attributes of any of them.
Can anyone think of a way to overcome this bug and force recognition of the
primary display?
I contacted ATI and I was incredibly frustrated by the extremely low level
of their support organization. Online help was not only not helpful, but
was incredibly patronizing and provided URLs to completely irrelevant
topics. Follow ups were ignored. When I called up their help, the first
guy I spoke to simply looked for any word that would allow him to categorize
my problem as not something he wanted to support, then he put me on hold for
an hour and never came back. When I called back again, the technician who
answered kept insisting I was using an HDTV display and needed a composite
cable. I kept trying to explain to him that it was a PC monitor with an
HDTV format and that there was no composite input, just normal DB15. He
couldn't grasp the point.
None of these sources was willing able to understand the actual problem;
none were willing to search in a knowledge base for the problem; none
understood why the behavior is clear bug in ATI's product.
Honestly, why doesn't ATI just install a voice recording that says "We no
longer can afford to support anyone. Goodbye." It would be far more
honest intellectually, and it would save ATI a ton of money too. It would
save me a lot of money as well, by saving my time.
