I'm about to sell my iPaq 3870 and don't want the buyer to gain all my
contacts, tasks and diary information or my Word files. Does anyone
know if there's a simple process for wiping the user memory but
keeping the operating system and any programs that I've loaded onto
the PDA since it left the factory?

Hi Mark,

You need to simply perform a hard reset on your ipaq. Please refer the user
manual for information on how to perform a hard reset.

The OP said that he wanted to keep "any programs that I've loaded" -
a hard reset will remove these and return the iPAQ to out-of-the-box
condition.

To be sure that you erase all of your data I suggest doing this hard reset.
Even spend some time later reinstalling some apps, but don't give this guy
your PDA with all your stuff in it. You can always delete some of them
manually (from Contacts appliaction, Calendar, etc) but I can not be sure
that all your private files were erased.

Yes, that's the problem. I want to *keep* the programs I've bought and
installed but *remove* the user data/files. Any ideas?

1. Delete everything in the iPAQ File Store.
2. Delete everything in My Documents and sub-folders.
3. Using a Database Editor
(e.g., http://www.phatware.com/hpcdbex.html) to delete
the following databases - Appointments Database,
Contacts Database, Tasks Database.

That should do it, though you'll probably need to
have a look around using File Explorer to see if there's
anything else you'd rather not pass on.

The securest way would be to do a hard reset, then create a guest
partnership to reinstall the programs with.

You also have to browse the registry to be sure,
so follow the general reset advice and re-install any software you bought.

Yes you can do all this things but is it worth it? Come on... it will take
few hours and you can not be sure that you succesfully deleted all your
data. It would be easier to hard reset and then reinstall software.

The problem is that a hard reset will *not* delete all data. Your
"permanent PIM" will survive a hard reset. I'm not even sure if it's
possible at all to erase "permanent PIM".

It's quite possible to erase 'Permanent PIM' by simply
unchecking the option to have these backed up in
the backup utility present on the PPC, and going into
the Filestore to erase all files present by hand, or
with a third-party utility to format the storage and
then performing the hard reset.
Permanent PIM only survives a hard reset because it has
been backed up to Flash memory, which will retain it's
contents even without power, and the backup utility will
see this backup in flash after a hard reset and proceed
to restore it to main memory.

It is, but differs per device.

How would I do that on an iPaq 3850?

In that case I would suspect that either PIM data is
not backed up at all to flash, or backups are handled
by the PIM programs themselves.. i've only had the
chance to play with PPC 2002 and 2003, from what i've
seen in 2002, a hard reset means you have absolutely
nothing left, only the factory settings.

It will be in the Start|Settings|System icons somewhere. I don't
recall off the top of my head. Your manual should also tell you.
