Cryptography service won't start on XP SP2

I'm having problems downloading and installing the latest (Aug 9 2005) set of
security updates from Microsoft. I looked into one of them and saw that the
Cryptography service wasn't running. It is set to start automatically but
isn't. I tried to manually start it and get an error: 193-0xc1. I've tried
deleting the CatRoot2 directory, rebooting and starting Cryptography, and
unregistering and reregistering a set of related DLLs per information I found
on the net. Nothing is getting Cryptography service to start up. I never
had problems with the monthly updates in the past.

The only other unusual situtation recently is that I had to do a Windows
Repair Install after having problems caused by bad disk blocks. After doing
the disk repair and the Repair install I cloned the problem disk onto a new
drive and that's what I'm running from. Everything else works OK to my
knowledge.

Any suggestions? I've appended the update log that first let me know that
Cryptography wasn't running, though I don't see that it offers any other
clues.

thanks,
Larry

I found the Event Viewer in the Computer Managment console. There was an
error (many of them) that had this message:
"The Cryptographic Services service terminated with the following
error:Cryptographic Services is not a valid Win32 application."

What can cause this? How do I fix it? Help!
thanks,
Larry

I've tried to correct this problem by copying copies of these DLLs from
another XP SP2 system into the Windows\System32 directory on the system with
the problem. I did this while in the XP Recovery Console. Doesn't fix the
problem. I still get the error saying that Cryptographic Services is not a
valid Win32 application. On the system I took the files from, Cryptographic
services is running fine.

I don't understand how it can't be a valid Win32 application. Something is
going on I definitely don't understand.

Problem was resolved by doing a repair install with xpsp1a and then upgrading
to sp2 and then letting system download and install all subsequent
updates/patches. Cryptographic service problem is gone.
