Just started Route Kanal and the loading screen as changed from the city
square to a derelict pond with helicopter. Really cool. Do these screens
change at random or as you get further ?

Yes, a new one for every new level you start.

And when you finish the game, they appear randomly so you were right on
*both* counts :-)

The loading screen and the available chapters to play is determined by a
variable inside your config.cfg. maybe Garrys mod changed something?

Ben, any idea how to restore the menu backgrounds if you've disabled them and
just have the blurred 2D images? I foolishly followed some advice that somebody
gave in here to speed up loading times, by typing something like "menubackground
none" in the console (can't remember the exact command, but the argument was
"none" ). However, now that the background has changed, I would like to see it
in 3D, but I can't.

It seems that all the command did was to make HL2 look for a map called "none",
which doesn't exist. A pretty blunt tool, and seemingly irreversible unless you
happen to know the name of the map that should be loaded :( Even then, I'm not
sure that the map would cycle to the next when the next level started, but it
would be a start.

Any ideas? Thanks.

(I'm not really that bothered, as I haven't played HL2 since early January, but
this thread reminded me of the problem)

Actually not every level in the game has a background screen.

No idea i'm afraid! I checked through my CFG files and couldn't find
anything like that. the only thing that I could find which related to
it was sv_unlockedchapters (which is obviously the thing that tells the
game how far you have progressed)

By the way, the 3D Backgrounds don't use the SP game maps, they use
special cut-down-size mini maps which only contain the chunk you can see
in front of you :) (Imagine if the game had to load the entire 1st map
of water hazard every time..)

Yes, I know. That's why it's so bleedin' hard to find out the map names! ;-/
