Dude, on one hand I feel sorry for you (do you not have a
girlfriend/boyfriend, family, friends, etc) as you constantly SPAM this
newsgroup with the same thing over and over, your hatred for STEAM. We got
it. We got it the first time, we get it now the 40th time, time to move on.
Perhaps take it to the streets or storm Valve's offices with custom made
T-Shirts and your online army in person. Just stop spamming this newsgroup
with the same thing over and over and over.

On the other hand I think you have great focus and if you do indeed have
time to kill, why not use this time to raise money for disease research
(fundraising) or volunteering at the hospital as a companion to someone that
is on their last days of life or some other worthy cause that everyone can
benefit from? Seriously.

Lots of us are getting older but we never have to grow up. That would be

You forgot to mention that 'they' think I pay for an ISP for their
connivance.
When they start paying for an ISP connection and a modem then they
can use it.

Apart from MMORPGs, which require a monthly fee, and any online
FPS'ers, that require an internet connection.

Oh - and every 12-24 months, you need to do all the first part again,
if you want to be able to play the games of the day...

he set up his headers not to have google archive his posts. Convient

You forgot to include the monthly fee for internet connection.

> EXTRA COSTS NOT ADMISSIBLE TO PLAY PC GAMES:

Then don't buy them.

Say hi to Dr. Katz for me. Tell him you need to up your visits to five
days a week. I recommend electro-shock treatments once a week.

How is someone supposed to play an MMORPG?

> . requiring internet connection to install
> . requiring internet connection to patch

So you are saying that people should be FORCED to buy a magazine so
they can get a demo disc that MIGHT have patches. Which they wouldn't
know because it never says on the magazine what patches are included. I
would rather download the patch at no extra cost to me at my convience.

> . requiring internet connection to purchase

Then how are the small developers who cannot get a publisher to send
out their games going to sell their games?

What about costs for the ISP which you're going to need so you can download
the inevitable patches?

> EXTRA COSTS NOT ADMISSIBLE TO PLAY PC GAMES:
> . monthly fees

I'm happy to pay my $16/month for World of Warcraft. It's more than worth
it.

> . humiliating "ask for permission" online activation

That costs me nothing and I am not humiliated by it, I don't even really
notice it's happening or care for that matter.

> . requiring internet connection to play

That leaves out a shitload of excellent games. As in most of the fun ones.

> . requiring internet connection to install

Of this entire waste of text, this is the ONLY thing that makes any sense
whatsoever. In an ideal world, a single-player game that has no online
component shouldn't need to access the internet to install. But we don't
live in an ideal world, and I'd rather have a one-time online activation,
than having to put the goddamn CD in the drive EVERY TIME I PLAY THE GAME.
If those are my 2 options, I'll take online activation EVERY TIME.

> . requiring internet connection to patch

Uh... how else are you going to get the patch? Demo CD's? :)

> . requiring internet connection to purchase

Some of the best games I've played are internet-purchases. It's the most
efficient way to buy games. And the best.

I haven't seen zero extra cost because of steam. Just because you think
it may happen doesn't mean it will. MMOs will always have an extra
cost. That is because they have an ongoing expense with servers. We've
already been over this months ago. It's time you move on in your life.

with the exception of steam which is why its so wrong, every other
pc game has single file patches available for free that can be very
easily distributed by many means

currently i get patches from other fellow gamers, so i don't need
to pay lonts of money to my isp to download patches

so there you have it another reason why i'm against steam!
pay for patches
with steam you pay for everything, its totally insane!

What do you need patches for? Your computer is broken and you can't
play anything. You said so yourself.

You pay for patches? I guess that's what you get for ragging on Valve
every chance you get. They give me the patches for free.

I think what you meant to say is "I'm totally insane!"

So you don't like internet games and the idea of paying an additional fee to
support the online play... the simple solution is to just not buy them.

Just because you like or don't like something doesn't mean everybody else in
the world feels the same way.

But why would you force him, and others, to pay for it?
There could easily be a patch you pay to d/l that will enable
on-line gaming.

So while you want to make sure that no patches are done by the internet
because *you* don't want to pay cash, you have no problem mooching off of
what your friends pay for...

You do realize that if you were serious, you wouldn't accept patches unless
everyone could get them for free without the internet. You not paying,
while your friends do does not count as free!!

Nuts. Im not big on the "requiring internet connection to install" but the
others not even worth considering as a blanket statement. Change it to
being your own opinion and it will at least make sense.

The issue being discussed is PAY TO PLAY online games.

The ONLY way to play those games are to play them online.

The extra costs are not necessary for single-player games, but if
available as an option they can make life easier.
For multi-player games, particularly MMO games, most of the second list
are "admissable". Obviously I'd love to play online games without a
monthly fee (who wouldn't?), but realistically, someone's got to pay
for the continuing development and maintenance of the game world and
the hardware.

I would say your second list is "Optional, but not essential".
