A friend has just bought HL:Source from Steam for $10 plus tax. I don't seem
to have the option in my Steam account to do the same, why is that? I bought
HL2 on DVD, not from Steam itself. I want to buy HL:Source, so how do I do
it?

hmmm..unless there is a new option, i think your friend is messing with you.
i dont think there are games ala cart..you would have had to buy the
ridiculous whole gold package to get it.

Nope, the option is only available to ATI holders for some strange
reason.. it'll probably be added for everyone at some point
(maybe
when DoD:S comes out)

Oooh! I didn't know that!
I don't suppose the HL1 entities (monsters, weapons) are available for
modding?

Yup, bugger. I'm guessing it will become available but not until Valve
think they've wrung every penny out of the Collectors editions etc.

Nope!
When you do this it displays the Bronze, Gold, Platinum offerings and on
each one it has a blurb that states something like, "Sorry, right now you
can only purchase 1 package per account & you already have one".

Could be a combination of both. My comment was less a 'we want all your
savings' and more a 'let's not undermine sales of Silver/Gold and
Collectors Edition packages' which Vivendi would not thank Valve for if
they release HL:S on Steam anytime soon.

But here's what I don't understand: How do they increase sales by
not allowing people to purchase more than one product? Not only
can't I buy HL:S a-la-carte (not that I really want to), but I can't
buy Silver, Gold, or CE, or all three. Makes no sense to me. I
thought maybe it prevents people from buying/redistributing CD
keys, but as long as they buy them in the first place, so what?

Sorry Nutt - not sure I understand what you mean. Why would you want to
buy more than one release of HL2?
Whatever your reason you could of course buy any (or all) of those and
put each on a different Steam account I presume? (This is recommended
anyway so that you can sell the games and relevant Steam account
together if you've a mind to). I'm not aware of any limitations on
number of Steam acconts you can have - others will correct me if I'm
talking out me bum.
So theoretically you can own all versions? Shaun

I can see someone wanting to buy the Collector's Edition if they
only had the base HL2/CSS release, especially if they had received
it as a gift.

You'd have to do that, clearly. I still don't understand the logic
behind restricting each account to one CD key (it's not the same as
restricting each CD key to one account - unless I'm missing
something.) It just reduces sales, if not by much. But still, why?
