Assuming it is a licensed product, one of the most common problems is that it needs to either be installed by someone with Administrator Privileges or right click the install application and select "Run as Administrator".

If you are only trying to configure an application already installed, the provider/mail host usually has setup instructions providing port settings, and mail server settings for the sending and retrieval of mail from their servers.
