Automatic updates

First, I would suggest leaving Windows Automatic Update turned ON, but set to
Notify only (go to Control Panel/Automatic Updates and select the third radio
button down). You will then receive notification of critical updates, but
will retain control over when they are downloaded.
As to the continued activity you see, it looks like simple "handshake"
activity between your modem and your internet portal ['hi, I'm still here',
'oh, good' kinda stuff!]; it will continue burbling away like that as long
as the line remains open.
