Hi, again.
Is there a way to get steam to install half life from the disc rather than
through steam? I have the disc in the drawer but cannot find a way to point
steam to it!!
Otherwise, i find steam fine, fwiw.

Doesn't look like there is to me.
Steam never wanted my HL1/OF disks at all. All it liked and took was
one cd key to my original HL game. I have BB so it didn't matter much
that Steam got right to the business of installing "The Platinum Pack"
games from scratch. I wanted to keep my original installs (pre-steam)
of my Valve games intact, so simply had Steam install its versions to
the Steam folder.
If you have the games installed first, then point Steam to those
folders, Steam will take em over for you. But it won't use the cd's.

If you perform a normal installation from cd to hdd, then run steam it
will migrate for you. I think. It did when converting from cstrike 1.5
to 1.6.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. Certainly worked for me. And you can
then uninstall Half-Life after Steam has made it's copy, and it'll still
work fine.
