Any advice on the benefits of using an SD card over a MMC
card in an iPaq 1940? I know that SD cards are supposed to
be faster but will I notice that much of a difference in
real life use?

From what I read, the only benefit is the write-protect
switch (which I can't see me needing) and the copyright
protection bit which actually uses up some of the quoted
space on the card.

Any brands best avoided?

The main difference is capacity. Far as I know MMC still tops at 128MB.

As to avoidance...SanDisk seems to be the overall leader in dissatisfied
owners, based on observations from various groups.

SD content protection features are not supported on pocketpc's

My experience between MMC and SD shows no perceptable speed differences,
but finding speed comparison sites might be usefu.

MMC top capacities have generally been lower than SD's, probably due to
demand and perception of SD's advantages over MMC

MMC uses less data lines (1) for transmission than SD (4) so is slower. SD
can be found in larger memory sizes than MMC, but cost a little more. Your
choice. I've seen 512MB SD's for sale, with some claims by posters that 2GB
weren't far away I'm not so sure they are that close. I've seen MMC to 128
Mb. Why not try a search engine to see what you find? Personally I'd go SD,
but that's my choice.

Check through the newsgroup archives for makes that have shown issues in
some machines, Sandisk comes to mind, and I had problems with a Dane Elec
card in my Psion pda.
