I am having problems trying to use a smart card based certificate to log onto
Windows XP SP2.

The system shows the following error in the event log:
Category: none
Type: Error
Event ID: 5
Description: An error occurred while retrieving a digital certificate from
the inserted smart card. The parameter is incorrect.

The infrastructure and card are ok as this works under Windows 2000 SP4.

Anyone have any experience as to why this happening and how to solve.

It sounds like you need to update your CSP on the Windows XP box.
Possibly, depending in the card, you may need to also load middleware on
the client. The actual software will depend on the vendor and smart card
used

Card Reader middleware examples: Litronic NetSign and ActivCard Gold.
