Yangon, March 07 (Myanmar Zayya): US secretary of state Condoleezza
Rice will pay a day's visit to Myanmar on March 17 to step up Myanma-US
strategic ties. She will discuss important bilateral, regional and
international issues with the Myanmar leadership here.
However, diplomatic sources in the US Embassy here said the State
Department had not yet announced Ms Rice's Myanmar visit. "If she comes, it
will be probably on March 17 and she will be meeting some of the key
leaders," an American diplomat said.
It will be a "substantive working visit". Indications are that Myanmar
would be one of the many countries Ms Rice would be visiting in South Asia
and South-East Asia.
Ms Rice would have extensive talks with Myanmar leaders. During these
talks the entire gamut of Myanma-US bilateral relations would be covered and
the two sides would also be using the opportunity to review regional and
international issues of mutual interest.
Ms Rice has the reputation of being one of the most vociferous
Myanma-supporters in the Bush Administration.
Myanma-US relations have gone from strength to strength in the past
few years. Fresh impetus to the Myanma-US strategic partnership was
witnessed in the wake of tsunami disaster in December when the US became
interested in rebuilding Atlantis in the Bay of Bengal.
