Hy,

getting this error message "primary master hard disk fail"; after
booting an ibm hard disk with a "maxtor draco" macintosh disk.

Award Plug&Play Bios says:

1st screen
Detecting IDE Primary Master...... IC35L060AVER07-0
Detecting IDE Primary Slave...... Maxtor Draco
Detecting IDE Secondary Master.......CR-48XATE
Detecting IDE Secondary Slave......None

2nd screen
Prim. Master Disk: None
Primary Slave Disk: None
Secondary Master Disk: CR-48XATE
Secondary Slave Disk: None

Diagnostics with Powermax displays error-codes: UKOE02, S57,
BiosExtensionSupport - failed, Partition information - read fail.

MaxBlast III does not recognize the Maxtor Hard Disk, IBMs Drive
Fitness Test does it, but could not handle the MacIntosh hard disk.

Anyone has an idea what to do? Are there other diagnostics tools for
windows which can handle Mac hard disks?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Regards,
berthold

Some additional details:

serial, model/GTLA:
S/N K80FEMVC
54098U8

Motherboard, chip
Medion MD9901, MicroATX
Intel Pentium III, 100 MHz Host-Bustaktrate, 512KB Cache
Intel ZX, Intel PIIX4E

Powermax-Diagnostics
Error-Codes: UKOE02, S57,
BiosExtensionSupport - failed
Partition information - read fail

Swap primary/secondary IDE cables at mobo end and let us know what it says.

Might be IDE controller dead/failing.

"Maxtor Draco" means that it is either dead or not set to spin-up auto.
Since the IBM cannot be read either the Maxtor is likely dead.

Put the Maxtor alone on its own cable, see what changes.

tried a lot of things.

used the maxtor drive as:

primary master single and slave
Secondary master single and slave

even swapped the IDE cables on the motherboard. Checked and changed
always the jumpers.

But getting "...hard disk fail". Bios recognizes as "Maxtor Draco"
and the IBMs drive as "IC06035AVER07"

New details from IBMs Drive Fitness Test on Maxtor's Draco says:

Primary Master/Slave Maxtor Draco 10,25 GB (although it's a 40,9 GB
hdd)
ATA-5
Cache 2097 KB
Ultra DMA: Highest Mode: 4, Active Mode: None
Write Cache: enabled
read look-ahead: enabled
S.m.a.r.t. options: disabled
security feature not swapped

regards,
berthold

So it's dead.

Probably the smallest size in the Draco series design.
The actual size is read from the platters once it has spun-up.
