Just asked around to people at work if they knew what today was the anniversery of? Almost noone knew. Even after I gave them a hint ie Dec. 7, 1941, they still didnt have a clue.
Amazing how things get forgotten about. How long untill people start forgeting about Sept. 11, 2001. OH!!! wait a minute. People already are forgetting.

Just my thought for today.

Peal Harbor Day.

It's when we had our pants down & we were taken advantage of. Any son of a WW2 Vet, knows that.

Look at it this way, people have trouble remembering Dec. 7, 1941 now, but they've already forgotten 9-11-2001 & we lost more in that attack!!!! Go figure!!! :frown:

True those events must be forever remembered for what happened and in honor of those who died. At the same time, there is 1 aspect which I think needs to be forgotten, and if it is not will ultimatly lead to more such events. That is racism. People have gotten over the whole anti-Japan thing but this is not wholly the case with racism created from 911.

Yea - the beginning of the end for empire of Japan - thus avoiding the necessity for an invasion that would have cost millions of lives - probably my fathers (he was a Marine in the Pacific) - and therefore, August 6th (Hiroshima), and several days later Nagasaki, may well have given me and millions more "war babies" on both sides a shot at this thing called life.

Oh by the way snorkius, all the allies who fought on both the European and Pacific fronts really appreciate the help and support that your country, Switzerland, gave. Seems your contribution was and remains being the secret bankers for the dictators, despots, terrorists, criminals, etc., etc. Switzerland, it turns out, was Hitler's bank. Your banks kept the funds deposited by wealthy Jews who would die at Hitlers hands ...

Please man, don't come here criticising the US and our allies - who made the best decisions we could at the time.

How long has it been since your country has done anything except hide money and make watches ... Give me a break ...

Yet the evidence is crystal clear. The use of nuclear weapons to end World War II quickly and decisively averted the death or maiming of hundreds of thousands American soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen. It also saved the lives of some 400,000 Allied prisoners of war and civilian detainees in Japanese hands, all of whom were to be executed in the event of an American invasion of Japan. Above all, it saved untold hundreds of thousands more Japanese-perhaps millions-from becoming casualties of pre-invasion bombing and shelling, followed by two invasions and forcible occupation.

All of the above should be taken into account. However, people also fail to realize that by nuking the Japanese we did them a huge favor. That's right. Had we delayed the Soviets would have invaded Japan first. In all likelyhood Japan would have become a communist country and not the economic superpower they eventually did become. Furthermore, the Chinese undoubtedly would have sought retribution for atrocities committed by the Japanese especially the Nanjing massacre.

There was no need of invasion anyway. The reason the bomb was used was the USSR. Just like D-day. What I don't understand is it's use against a city. There were plenty of military targets.

Man, where were you back during WWII - with what you seem to think you know, we could have all retired to a pub and got faced while the aggression and occupations just petered out from there own weight ...
I'm sure Hitler and Emperor Hirohito were getting bored and were just days away from calling it quits anyhow ... LOL.

Revisionist history has always been troublesome and you are a good example. Yea - we wanted to halt the USSR - but we also offered to "demonstrate" the power of this new weapon to Japan, but they rejected the offer. With little time to lose - we took a shot. I, personaly, would have smoked Hirohito, but I wasn't in on that decision. One thing you can't deny - it worked. And saved countless lives - and the spread of Stalin's brutal brand of totalitarianism.

If you're interested in learning something - try this site - has a lot of brutal facts, offered up from the Japanese perspective - biological weapons used against the Chinese, etc. - and refutes much of you revisionist bullshit ...

The only person 'revising' history is you. Your statement about the bomb saving countless lives is not, whatever you may think, a fact. It is speculation. I can argue that it killed a lot more than it saved. Sure it saved some AMERICAN lives, but what does it matter, japanese or american?

The bomb was a brutal, effective show of power. The US cowed the world, showing coplete disregard for human life. I'm not saying another would have done it any differently, but it was still a masacre and an atrocity. Labeling it any different is, like you said, revising history.

The end never justifies the means.

Did you read this ?

Your a student - do your homework before you lock in on a theory (which is not correct, btw). Truman, through diplomatic channels, offered to demonstrate the bomb to the Japanese - they rejected the offer - that's an atrocity. The Japanese leadership condemned their own people to this act - that's the crime. It's unlikely that those small A-bombs killed more than the firebombing of, say, Dresden (100,000+ , German estimates). Link

I agree, all war is ultimately murderous - but let's remember who the agressors were and who was drawn into this thing. You can't deny that they started the fight, had a valid offer to quit, but refused - and we damn sure ended it.

Go back and study the links I provided. If you have any intellectual honesty, you'll be compelled to modify your views.

But somehow, I doubt you will. Give me something other than your immaturity and naivety and I'll read it.

You, on the other hand, are trying to justify the murder of thousands and thousands of civilians.

Of course the A-bomb was not the only such incident. ~2 million people civ. died in germany under allied bombardments. That does not change the fact that you are trying to justify the un-justifiable.

It was more like American morality than pride that suffered, anyone that can go back and look at the devastation from both sides and find satisfaction in a war such as that, doesn't really know what war is all about. Both America and Japan suffered greatly, but civilianwise Japan paid the ultimate price, would a demonstration of the power of the bombs moved Japan to surrender, NO!, or they would have surrendered after the first one was dropped for sure, but they didn't.

You're free to point your finger at us, we on the other hand have to live with the knowledge of how deadly we can get when pushed too far, what do you think America is? Hollywood? Americas beginning was from the refuse of the British, and we came to America the land of the free, and beat the hell out of the native American Indians, and basically took the land from them. Then we turned around and kicked the British's a$$ back to Britain, which somehow we seem to be friends with today. So we then opened the door to all the refuse, send em, we'll take em, Americans are a weird lot, we're a mix of every nationality on the face of the planet.

We can be some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but don't fvck with us, we don't play that sh1t, those that you're arguing with here, weren't part of the decision making when it came to the bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but we get the blame just because we're Americans. Do I stand behind what my country did? Yes! Am I proud of what we did? No! Was I sad that innocent lives were lost, and women and children were slaughtered in an instant? Yes! Anyone that looks at the available pictures of the aftermath should get sick to their stomachs. Even from a military point of view some of our own generals were shocked at the way the war ended, so I'll close my 2cents with a quoted statement from General Omar N. Bradley.

By; General Omar N. Bradley, Chief of Staff, United States Army, who said in 1948,
"We have too many men of science, too few men of God. We have grasped the mystery
of the atom and rejected the Sermon of the Mount . . . The world has achieved brilliance
without wisdom, power without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical
infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know
about living."

The Manhattan Project changed all of our lives. It changed the history of
mankind and civilization. The ultimate lesson learned is that scientists, and ultimately
citizens, must taken responsibility for their actions. Science should be used for the
improvement of our lives and not for our destruction.

Look, I agree with you. And I'm not blaming anyone for what happened. The war was the most terrible thing to have happened to all mankind. Everyone suffered. But to remember one event as the most important, just because it was an attack against america, is not right. Pearl Harbor was not, by far, the biggest battle nor was it the most costly in terms of human life. The only significant thing about it was the fact that it was on american soil. I think the japanese learned their lesson, I think the americans learned theirs. Why hang on to past grievences? The War should be remembered as whole. I'm not saying people should forget the soldiers that died in Hawaii, but no soldier should be forgotten. It's a safe bet that most people dont remember the dates of the other, much bigger, battles in the pacific.

Thanks PF.

I normally don't get into these threads, I'm to emotional when it comes to my country & I get defensive real fast. As it escalates, my battle face comes on & I'm back in jungle survival mode again. I read them, but let others comment., however every now & then I have to put in my $.02.

Like I said before, I'm a tad older than most here, I was raised differently, the world I grew up in no longer exists. So I'm formed in a time gone by. I've got things to offer, but I temper them. Lets face it, my son's & friends that I have that are there age & we do things together wouldn't tolerate me spouting to them like there Dad.

Funny thing is, my Dad was the same with me, looking back. We worked together in the same place for 17 1/2 years, somewhere along the line we became best friends. He was always my Dad in the back of my mind, but more importantly, he was my best friend. I've passed that along to my sons as well. My Dad knew & I know, that you'll know your children as adults far longer than you'll know them living under your roof growing up. I didn't want to drive my sons away, like so many do. After all is said & done, I know in my heart, that my Family meant more to me than anything else I've got or will ever have, IMO

Here I go rambling away this morning, sorry!!

Walk softly and carry a big stick (W.C.), right now we got the big stick. History shows that bloody wars have been going on since time begin , including American history, the trick is to have the big stick but also a compasionet heart. The end of WW2 was like that. The big stick was the atomic bomb , by useing it lives where saved. Japan was not going to give up till you entered there country and completely took it over (was in there history). There would have been many more lives lost Japan, and American.
The trick is to always have compasion if you loose that you then become a dictator ( like Sadam ).
