my PC has maxtor 120G as primary master, zip drive as primary slave,
CD rom reader as secondary master, cd rom writer as secondary slave.

I replace the CD rom reader with an old hard drive (Quantum Fireball
40G), so I can copy the old data over. When the computer starts,
everythings shows in BIOS as expected: Maxtor primary master, zip
primary slave, Quantum secondary master, cd rom writer secondary
slave. But when it hangs when it comes to the screen window (win 2000
starting....with the window logo). Is that because the old hard drive
quantum is defected or I did something wrong?

Hit F8 before you get there and go into safe mode, just to see if safe mode works.
Also make sure your jumpers are correct.
