sony dvd erases device manager list

I attempted to install the software and my sony dvd camcorder on my computer and it will not recognize it. When I go to device manager it is an empty window. I tried to install the camera on my laptop computer as well and the same thing happened. I've uninstalled the software and drivers and the device manager is still empty. Has anyone experienced this?
