i have an old Maxtor drive that is suddenly giving "BOOT DISK FAILURE" on
startup. i tried repartitioning and formatting with WinXP setup disc, but
Win goes thru the entire format then fails at the end saying ti cannot
complete the format (i presume it is tryig to write the boot info?).

i ran Maxtor PowerMax and all diags passed with zero errors. i did a
complete low-level format with no problem. then i tried the WinXP setup
disc again to partition and reformat but it failed as before.

how can it pass the diags but not be formattable/bootable? is it
salvagable? (it's only a 20GB drive and probably not worth spending too
much time on.)

Format it FAT then convert it to NTFS

maybe this will work
