I was wondering if anyone could take a couple seconds and help me out.
I have a PC running Win XP Pro, AMD Athlon XP 1500, 1 GB of RAM, and
a 80 GB Maxtor HD. Over the last few months, my computer has started
to lock up on me with the HD light constantly lit. When my wife uses
the computer, she says it has never locked up. I actually reinstalled
Windows and have gotten the same problem. Can anybody lead me in a
direction to fix this?

Thanks.

I wouldn't be suprised if your wife is a key factor in this whole thing.

What programs are you running that your wife doesn't?

Check what programs you running, particularly those that run in the
backround. Some rather worthless or trivial programs can be tremendous
hogs under Windows, constantly writing to the HD or using CPU cycles to
the point that it interfers with the programs you really want to run.

Hit CRTL-ALT-DEL and select "Task Manager" and then examine what processes
are running. (You'll have to do a google lookup on many of them to figure
out what they are doing and if they are legit.) You may want to uninstall
certain program or change your msconfig so they don't automatically load
when you start your computer. Also, don't overlook the possibility that
your PC might have a virus, worm, trojan, adware or sypware installed that
is causing the problem.

Look at the contents of the Event Viewer for possible errors.
