I had been using Drive Image 5 to back up my C: drive with no problems until
a few weeks ago when it refused to make an image and also wouldn't restore
one. In each case I got an Error 58: "Can't write to boot section. An
antivirus program may be running." (not the exact wording). The only
change that I had made at about that time was to upgrade to ZoneAlarm Pro
from ZoneAlarm Free, but when I cleaned out that program I still had the
problem.
I also disabled Norton AV with the same results.
I've checked the BIOS and there was no indication of a drive protection
setting to turn off. (I'm running win98se).
When I tried to run fdisk/mbr to update the mbr, it couldn't find the file.
I finally located it in a Drive Image sub-folder: /VFD/mbr.dat, and
determined there that it didn't have a read-only or hidden file attribute.
(Where is mbr.dat supposed to be?).
I tried fdisk/mbr at that location and got the message: "Write protect error
writing fixed disk. The master boot code has NOT been updated."
If anybody has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate hearing them.
