......I can't find sensible, straight-forward answers to these:

(a) I have ADSL at home with a fixed IP and a computer that is
on almost all the time. I have set up my iPaq and my mobile to
enable access to the internet via GPRS. Is it at all possible
to do an Activesync via this combination if I am away from the
desk for a day or longer? This would be great for backups, and
also mean that my wife can book appointments for me and update
Outlook and I'd get the updates when I sync.

(b) iPaq 1940. There's over 13MB of Flash rom set aside for the
backup utility. Seems a waste to me when most of my data will
be on the memory card and all apps can be re-installed. I also
use Activesync to back up before installing and new software
and also once per day. Is there a way that I can utilise this
flash rom to maybe install my own applications? I used to be
able to do this on a Sony Clie (PalmOS) device using a couple
of apps that I have forgotten the names of!

(c) Does the Activesync backup everything? If I install a bit
of trialware and it messes things up, providing I did a back-
up using Activesync beforehand, I *can* restore it and be at
exactly the same position I was in before?

That's just three questions for now....probably more to come,
but so far I am happy to have moved from PalmOS to PPC.

Checkout Sooner Al's page on Remote Activesync and VPN,
this should get you going.

The Flash rom can be used to hold program but it won't be as fast as regular
memory. The flash rom won't erase if you run the batteris down like regular
ram
would so I would use that as a place for you backup(also see next answer)

The backup program in activesync is not very good and it's very slow
I'd recommend Sprite Backup. You can backup to a network or to your
device(that flash rom comes in handy) and it's fast, very fast. It will
also
create self executing restores so you won't need to install the software to
recover
from a backup.

Oh dear - I struggled getting Bluetooth working....going to
have to wait until I get my breathe back before I start on
that one!

So - assuming I would be foolish enough to use the flash for
program storage and not for backups, how would I go about it?
Is there an app somewhere that will format the flash and move
apps there?

I've not noticed anything wrong with the AS backup....what are
the specific thinsg I ought to worry about? The speed looks ok
to me - I am normally busy and if it takes ten minutes to back
up then that'd not be a problem.

Go through the regular install procedure, ActiveSync will ask if you wish to
install the program to the default directory (or words to that effect).
Answer no, and select location from the drop down menu. You could move
programs already installed, but there may me registry entries to edit, and
at the very least, you'll have to re-route your links to show for the new
location.

The main benefit of Sprite, is that it can be backed up to a storage card,
or Flash Rom, as long as space provides. This is ideal because should you be
away from your PC, and something happens to your PDA, you have the backup in
your hands, ready to be restored. There are other smaller details, but for
now, that should be the main one to you.

Thanks for that - have now got some of my apps located on the Flash
memory and they seem to work just as fast as the ones in the main
memory.

Accepted - but at the moment I am never away from the desktop for more
than a day. That may change and if it does then I will certainly look
into Sprite and a seperate SD card just for back-ups I think.
