Seagate ST32132A failure

I've got a ST32132A that has stopped being reported by the bios. During PC
bootup the drive spins up, makes some "seeking" sounds and then spins down.
It has been disconnected since the problem occurred. After this happened I
started searching this newsgroup for recovery options. It seems there are
two potential DIY fixes. Freezer and logic board swap.

I bought a refurb ST32132A for cheap and am wondering if I should try the
board swap first or the freezer trick first.

Board swap! Freezer is a once only effort as drive will be even worse after.

Doubtful.
If there is a problem with that method then it manifests already at spinup,
not after spindown (quite a while later).

Trying to rip the magnetic layers off the platters (or the sliders
from the actuator beams) first?
How do you think to recover from that with a board swap?
