Help with macro focus (Minolta Z1)

This has an autofocus feature (click button halfway down, it gives a white
dot when focused). (This is probably very common, but I'm a noob, what do I
know?) It has a regular, macro, and super macro mode. When I'm about 12"
away from a subject, I seem to usually get a red dot (can't focus). This
happens when I use regular mode or macro mode. Anyone know why?

You can help with focus problem by providing two things: More light
and a contrasting item in the middle of the scene. Both of these
help the camera to focus.

Well, I didn't say you had to leave the item in the picture.

It's simple really. Pull out your drivers license and hold it near
your subject and focus (push the shutter button half way down until it
focuses) then remove the item from the frame and snap the picture.
