I recently had my IBM PC upgraded to XP Home by a
professional. When I got it home and hooked it up to the
monitor, I could see the normal things on the screen that
come up when you startup, then the window showing that
Windows was loading. Then the screen goes blank. I hear
the Windows music indicating that Windows is loaded but
still the screen is blank. The guy who worked on the
computer for me said that my monitor might not have been
set with the right resolution (it's a few year sold) so
hook the computer up to another monitor and when it comes
up reset the resolution lower for the older monitor, etc.
etc. I decided to just go ahead and buy a new monitor and
hooked it up tonight and the same thing happened. Not that
I don't trust my pro, but before I have to pay him to come
to the house, any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks.

Firstly I don't see why you should have to pay him anymore, he did the
upgrade and got paid for it and he should ensure it is working, it may mean
taking the pc and monitor to him, if it's not far that's what I'd do.
Otherwise, when booting, press F8 (generally) or the option to boot in to
safe mode, and choose boot with vga support, or something similar. Hopefully
it may work.

Follow Graham's instructions to boot into Safe Mode. Once there, go to the
website of your graphics card manufacturer and download and install their
latest drivers.
