Solution
You cannot use USB to connect your camera. Your XL1s must be connected via firewire.

You will need a firewire cable with a 4-pin on one end and a 6-pin or 9-pin (if you have an FW800 iMac) on the other. The cable doesn't come with the camera or computer and must be purchased separately. Connect the camera and turn it on in the playback mode with a tape inside.

The camera doesn't just pop up on your desktop. You will use your NLE (video editing) software to control the camera. You might try starting with iMovie since it's probably already on your computer and very straight forward to use. Any DV NLE, professional or consumer, will be compatible with your XL1s.

If your editing software doesn't recognize the camera, then you probably have a bad firewire cable, a bad port on either the camera or the computer, or aren't using the right connections (ie. USB).
