I have just purchased a Sony DCR HC40 and a Firewire cable but when I plug them into a Toshiba (Portege) running XP-Pro I don't seem to be connecting. I have replaced the cable so what am I missing, assumming that the Sony is setup correctly

Not sure about what you mean by point 1, have connected a SONY DVD Burner through the Firewire and it is picked up imediatly as per your point 4. I have tried power off mains and cam in playback, Hvae now also swaped cable, its beginning to feel like cam not talking, my next step is to try a SONY PC ???

point one. As external device dvd is recognised then the firewire card is
ok.
Did you use the same cable for the cam as the dvd writer? When connecting
the cam did you get the xp ping? If not I'd suggest returning the cam as it
may well be faulty, as we have proved the cable and firewire work.
