For one or another reason, my AVI files that showed up nicely in WM Player and Power Cinema are no longer recognised. Can someone guide me through the problem as I'm not familiar with codecs etc. Thanks.

AVI files can be compresed or uncompressed. An uncompressed AVI will take
up approximately 12gb of hard drive space per hour.....so you probably won't
find many online - and if you did, you probably wouldn't try downloading
them.

So we come to the conclusion that the AVI file you want to play is
compressed... and in order to be able to play it, you need to know which
particular codec it is compressed with.

Happily someone wrote something that will help
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Let G-Spot analyze the AVI and once you know which codec encoded and
compressed the file, you can download them, install them and the file will
play.

Thanks Cari, I checked the file and found DIVX3 Low Motion. The problem now is that I don't find a suitable codec, and full packs won't install at all. It's all about small cartoons (app 10 minutes, 40 MB). Where to search ?

Hi Cari, the problem is solved : I simply installed the original codec pack 5.2 and everything is fine now. Thanks again for your quick reaction and the tip about GSpot.
Still wonder of course how these codecs have disappeared suddenly, without any system change. The only action taken on these files, was importing them in WM9 player. ???
Kind regards,
Jul
