Splash Screen Size Too Large

Hello. First time here, so bear with me.

My problem is that when the Windows Splash Screen appears
during start up, it is too large. The "copyright" info on
the lower left is cut off. I also notice that the display
is similarly cut off/too large on CD-ROM games I have
installed. The desktop and all other programs appear
normal. I have checked all my display and video settings
but have come up empty. Any ideas? I am running XP on an
HP 521c Pavilion. Reinstalling XP did not change anything.
I am not sure when this problem first began.
