Offline_Uncorrectable sectors

Hi!

I am using an IBM-DTLA-307030 (30GB) as a secondary drive.
Yesterday I found 5 offline uncorrectable sectors in an extended
SMART test. I had them re-allocated (according to the
badblock-howto). Now SMART outputs the following:

196 Reallocated_Event_Count [...] 37
197 Current_Pending_Sector [...] 0
198 Offline_Uncorrectable [...] 0

May I safely continue to use this drive or should I buy a new one?

Thanks for help.

Kind regards

Philipp

Another one bites the dust....

This drive model is known to die with this type of symptom.
The problem is very likely to get worse fast. Do a backup and
convert the think into a paperweight.

Hmm, zero .....

Depends on how the uncorrectable read errors came into being.
Since you reassigned them without testing the data holding ability
first (write, then check), you may have lost an important clue.

If they appeared because of power dips or overheating then overwriting
them may have recovered them and not appear in the offline test at all.

Oh gosh, he never had a problem but now that he did an offline SMART
test and finds 5 (yes, a massive five!) uncorrectable *read* errors, now
it is destined to die fast.

So you may never be found out a liar, eh Arnie.

Back up your data....Then run the tests on the DFT diskette for your
drive. I just about threw away two IBM drives from bad advice. I
performed the exerciser test and then did what it said and the drives
have been good for over two years.
