obtaining CAB files

Forum Cell Phones & Smartphones : Windows Mobile obtaining CAB files

Hi all

I was a Palm user for many years after a less than satisfactory
experience with Windows CE when it first came out back in the 90s.

However, the accidental destruction of my Tungsten's screen has caused
me to try the PocketPC. I've picked up a nice little iPaq 1940 and am
throroughly enjoying it so far.

However, I don't use Windows on my computer, and do not have access to a
machine running it either (at least not one I can install ActiveSync
on). There are sync options for my platform, though, and I am using that
with a great deal of success.

However, not running windows means that in many cases I have to use a
third party tool to extract CAB files from the .exe install apps. That
works about 70% of the time, and when it doesn't many software authors
have been kind enough to send me CAB files.

But two of the apps I *really* want are Microsoft Reader and Palm
Reader. When requesting CAB files of the former Microsoft sent me a
form e-mail saying I should just install Activesync (again, not an
option I can, or want to take), and Palm haven't replied at all!

So, is there another place to obtain these CAB files - perhaps a place
on the manufacturer's websites themselves? I am aware of the freecab
site, but it doesn't carry MS Reader.

Please note that I'm not interested in warez.

Many thanks!

ck

Note you still need your activation or registration code for
commercial apps.

Thanks James. Much appreciated. However, it doesn't list MS Reader.
Guess I'll have to persuade the nice (but Palm centric) tech support
people at work to let me install Activesync.

I assume that I can just register my PPC as a guest there, so I don't
mess with my settings on my home machine?

Yes. "Guest" works just fine for app installation. Note on the Palm
Reader install that there really isn't a CAB file. Just take the "Palm
Reader.exe.ppc300.arm" file and rename it "Palm Reader.exe" and rename
the utildll.dll.ppc300.arm "Utildll.dll" and drop both in \Program
Files\Peanut Press, then create a Peanut Press folder off of \My
Documents, then copy "Palm Reader.exe" using File Manager and Paste
Shortcut to your Windows Start menu. That should get it installed.

Aha! A sneaky way, and it works great. That's exactly what I was looking
for as I couldn't figure out why the Palm Reader .cab file wasn't
working.

Thanks so much Ed!

Yeah, their .CAB isn't really a .CAB, at least not the format a Pocket
PC can understand. It is more like a .ZIP with a different name.
