A poster just replied to my topic on web cam's and said he had a router that would not allow live feeds and possibly you have a software fire wall you need to configure access permissions for the cam.

Hey there nighthack

Yep. My pcs are in a wireless network and pass through a wireless router to access the net. also my internet cable service provides a virus checking service. So now what?

Are there web cmas out there that can slip through the routers "defences", and what about the cable services virus detection program? That last one i could always unsubscrib from if that's all it is and purchase some good antivirus software.

cheers

If you're going through a nat router, you'll need to forward the port(s) in use to the computer with the webcam for incoming connections to work. If your router has a firewall or if you're running a software firewall, you'll need to open the same ports, possibly for both incoming AND outgoing traffic.

Since I don't do video-conferencing/webcamming, I don't know the ports involved. The software you're using should say which ports it's using, either in the configuration settings or in a manual somewhere.

Hey your holiness

Umm. Haven't come across anyplace in the web cam software where it mentions ports. Perhaps in windows? I us XP Family. Where would i find that? And how do i "open" ports?

There might be something about ports in the router configuration software however.

i would like to get this up and running for my daughter. Hope she is "sensible" with it when and if i do get it working!

Which software would you be using for video conferencing?

If its microsoft netmeeting, this doc should be useful.

If you are using software firewalls, you would open the ports there. That includes the firewall supplied with winXP, if that is enabled. You would also have to open the ports on any other firewall boxes you have.

If you are using a nat router, you would also have to configure it to forward those ports to the computer you want to use for video conferencing.

Looking at that document, thats a lot of ports. I don't know of other video conferencing software, but messenger/netmeeting seems pretty bad from a security standpoint.

Things may be easier if your router supports uPnP.
