XP Screen Resolutions hangups

When trying to change between different screen
resolutions either manually or by programs (i.e. DirectX
testing/games), my screen flashes in and out between what
looks like a no input state, then black, then part of the
icons, flash, etc, until finally after about a minute it
stabilizes in the new resolution. I have updated
everything in the Nvidia dept, have Flashed my
motherboard and video card EEProms, installed DirectX
9.0c, etc. I have the following:

Gigabyte GA-8INXP m/b, 1G ram, Leadtek WinFast A280 LE
MyVivo with Nvidia Geforce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X.

Anybody have thoughts on this one??? It's drivin' me
buggy! I really want to play my Star Wars Pod Racer!
