No 5.1 sound on HL2

On both the demo and now the full blown game I only can get stereo sound.
Neither the 4 speaker or 5.1 option give me anything. I use a Soundblaster
Live 5.1 on my system and am using the latest drivers. Although earlier
drivers did not work either. On checking the Stream website they seem to
concentrate on other sound cards and basically say you need the latest
drivers for Creative soundcards. Has anyone found a solution for this or am
I stuck with stereo sound?
