Nikon 5000 all pics very bright when using continuous

I have had the Nikon 5000 for 2 years now and use it all the time but havent
really got the best from it, i thought i would try the continuous shot
settings and that seems to work fine except for the fact that outdoors the
pictures are almost totally white. indoors seem to be ok, i have had a
fiddle about with the brightness settings and got nowhere.
any suggestions greatfully received.
