I recently discovered the WMV-VCM video codec (you can find it with a
search at Microsoft.com), with which you can use WMV9 video compression in
any program in any container. Therefore, in using a program such as Virtual
Dub, one can create an AVI file using WMV9 as the compression codec.
I created a movie with that, and thought while using WMV as the video codec,
I might as well use WMA as the audio codec. (Although that's not a
requirement. You can use any audio codec with it.)
If under Audio settings in VirtualDub I choose "Full Stream Compression",
then choose "Compression", and see the codecs to choose from, I don't see
any that I think are WMA9. There are two that could be: one says "Windows
Media Audio V1", and the other "Windows Media Audio V2". What are those? Are
either the same as WMA9?
If I choose one of those two, however, I do not see any formats (sample
rate, bit rate, stereo or mono, etc.) to choose from on the right hand side.
If I click "Show All Formats", then I see some. But why do they not show up
right away? Are they considered incompatible?
If I go ahead and choose one of those formats that came up when I clicked
"Show all Formats", a problem arises at the final stage, when I try to save
the video. The encoding doesn't really start-- right after clicking on
"Save" the process stops with an error message:
"Error initializing audio stream compression, the requested conversion is
not possible."
I guess that might have something to do with the fact that when one first
clicks on either of the WMA codecs shown, no formats appear on the right
side, until one clicks "Show all Formats".
Is there a way to use current WMA audio compression in a movie created with
the WMV-VCM codec, saving to an AVI container? (Perhaps something similar to
the WMV-VCM video codec, for audio?) (One would think that if they provided
WMV-VCM for using WMV video in different programs and containers, there
would be something similar for audio. Otherwise in creating the video using
WMV-VCM one has to use a different audio codec, such as MP3.) (Although if
those two codecs, WMAVI and V2, are completely incompatible with AVI, whey
do they appear in the codec list at all? And if they are compatible with
some AVI video, one would think that they would be most compatible with an
AVI video with WMV as the compression codec.)
Do any of the audio transcoders for video, such as BeSweet, support WMA
audio?
If I were to convert the audio stream to WMA in another audio converter,
such as WME or DBPowerAmp, would I be able to mux that WMA file with the AVI
movie with some program? Which?
