Is a firewire card necessary or can I use something like the Adaptec VideoOh!
DVD (AVC-2200) with a VCR?

Yes firewire is essential for cpaturing from a camcorder in Movie maker.

You can also capture through other routes but those routes might have other
capture software best suited for them. Adaptec VideOh is as far I understand
is a direct capture to DVD solution with hardware encoding capability? In
that case Moviemaker is not the best suitable software for you.
