1 Win98 -> Software 1 -> Software 2; No boot
2 Win98 -> Software 2 -> Software 1: Boot OK

3 WinXP -> Software 1 -> Software 2: Boot OK
4 WinXP -> Software 2 -> Software 1: Boot OK

Both of Software 1 Software 2 are all changing MBR of hdd.

Anyone recomend how to make no. 1 boot successfully?
Difference between MBR of win98 and winxp?

What is Win98 -> Software 1 -> Software 2 supposed to mean, too cryptic.

You should be able to do
fdisk /mbr
at a dos prompt, say from a startup floppy and get it to boot.

More likely that XP doesnt allow Software 2 to molest the MBR.

Thanks for your reply

As I wrote below, Software 1 and 2 are all changing MBR of hdd. When the OS
is WinXP, there's no problem in installing these two software in any order.
But when the software is Win98, if the order is 'software 1-> software 2',
there always is no success in booting.

The other problem is that i should install the software 2 in the PCs that
already was intalled with Software 1 on Win98. I need to install Software 2,
on Win98 with Software 1. Software 1 and 2 are all security software and
Software 1 on win98 doesn't allow any change of MBR or even Any hardware
changes.. I know it's very difficult question. I just wonder if anyone can
give any advice on this.......

Its still not clear why you are attempting
to run two levels of 'security software'

Its not surprising that software 1 stops software 2 from working properly.

You need to be more specific in your description.

First, how do you switch between booting to XP or Win98? A boot manager? Which
one? Do you use Microsoft's dual boot that comes with XP? If not, then why
not?

Secondly, how are Win98/XP installed? On the same drive and separate
partitions? On two different drives? In the same partition?

Thirdly, what is the nature of those "security software"? Access
authorization? Where does that software code reside, on track 0 as an overlay,
or as file in the file system area.

At what stage of the boot process does "software 1/2" intervene. You can tell
by the messages on screen prior to starting SW 1/2. If you don't know the
answer then just quote the exact phrasing of the last messages shown.

Last, what happens when you don't load any of the two software? Can you bypass
them and boot into XP or Win98 without them?

It's not a difficult question, just insufficient info.

> I just wonder if anyone can give any advice on this.......

Possibly, if you provided more details.
