Iomega USB drive - garbage?

I bought an Iomega 80GB USB 2.0 hard drive and have been experiencing
problems. I'm sure they're due to the driver software and not the
hardware because my friend has experienced the exact same problems,
including one that happens even without any Iomega hardware installed.

1. When the utility to close the drive is run so that it can be safely
unplugged, Windows 98SE brings up a blue screen with a fatal exception
0D or 0E error. When it's answered with a "Y"es to resume, Windows
usually recovers OK, but after this is done several times, Windows
becomes sluggish with the screen updates or even locks completely.

2. When the driver software is uninstalled and Win98SE is rebooted, all
the device drivers are lost, and the Device Manager becomes empty
except for the "Computer" entry.

Both of us also bought Western Digital USB 2.0 hard drives (and at last
his Iomega even contains a WD IDE HD), and they work perfectly.

BTW, these IOmega drives seem to run hotter than others because of a
metal cover over the internal IDE HD's circuit board. The cover is
just for preventing radio interference, and drilling a bunch of 1/8"
holes in it could help keep the drive cooler/data intact.

Thanks, I'll try that. BTW I just learned that the IOmega software
also uninstalled my printer driver.

I don't know this specific Iomega hardware, but I have a suggestion: try
posting over at alt.iomega.zip.jazz. There's someone called DeepOne who seems
to have good answers to such questions there.
