Trying to use my hard drive as a master

I am using a Western Digital HD with win2k on it. I have set the
jumper to be a master. the computer will recognize the HD start to
boot to win2k but after the initial load it reboots the system. I
have tried setting the jumpers to slave, CS, and even leaving the
jumper off. each of these senarios have given me the same effect. I
have been to CMOS and set the HD as a primary master. When i put the
original HD in and make the win2k HD a slave, it does not recognize it
at all. What shall i do?

I know that this HD will work on my computer at home. However i am in
another country and trying to boot it on someone elses computer. So
Re-installing is not an option mainly b\c i don't have the cd.

To answer questions, my HD goes to the first load of win2k where you
have the advanced options by hitting F8, this is where it reboots.

Yes, i have set it as auto and user. the HD has been recognized in
both.

What did you do with the jumpers when you did that ?<------

I set the jumper on slave first, second i set it to CS, and also
empty. for each of these settings, HD is not reconized. Anymore
questions? suggestions ?

How far does it actually get ? Win2K can reboot on a serious problem.

You should have it with no jumper if its the only
drive on the cable. WD is unusual in that regard.

Do you have the drive type as AUTO ?

Try the single drive again, no jumpers, and try installing from the CD again.

but you know that there are thousands of different mainboards ! forget
it if you don't have the very same as at home . get a partitioning prog
and install a w2k from a copied cd on the second partition for this
other computer .

No wonder. Their motherboard (and other cards) may need very different
drivers.

Perhaps you could try booting into safe mode and then installing the right
drivers?

Do you really need to boot from this drive? Could you not use what he's got
and hook yours up as a slave?

Do you really need to boot it ? It should be possible
to see the contents of the drive without booting off it.

Can get messy tho if the system has a Win9x
installed and the drive is formatted NTFS etc tho.

Its possible to download a 2K CD using a P2P system.

OK, most likely the problem is just that its attempting
to load the drivers appropriate to the motherboard on
your home system and they dont work with the
motherboard you are attempting to boot the drive on now.

The normal way to fix that is to boot the 2K CD
and repair the 2K install. That will load the drivers
appropriate for the motherboard in the system
you are trying to boot the drive in now.

You basically have to load the drivers for the new
system and that isnt trivial to do without the 2K CD.

If you just want to get access to some files on that
drive, and dont actually need to boot it, the BartPE
bootable CD or the knoppix bootable CD can both
allow access to NTFS formatted drives etc.
