My Sony camera was working fine with firewire capture until the other day
when suddenly it froze every application I tried to use with it. I hadn't
used it for a few months and then plugged it in and it won't capture.
The computer does recognize the device and says Sony camcorder. It asks what
program I want to record with. Then no mattter which program I choose, the
program will become unresponsive and I have to quit it.
I took the cable and camera to a store and plugged it into their computers
and it worked fine. So it must be the computer. They suggested that maybe the
memory is full but I do have 488MB Ram free plus 80 G hard drive. They also
suggested the ports are bad but that means both are bad and it recognizes the
camcorder so I doubt that is the answer.
By the way the USB capture still works fine but the quality is too low for
use.

Try changing the cable.

But the cable worked fine when I checked it yesterday on another computer, as
did the camera.

You could try re-installing the firewire card and its drivers.

I've had a similar problem. Try plugging the cable into a different firewire
port (assuming you have more than one). If that doesn't work than take out
the firewire PCI card and put into a different PCI port on your computer.
Hope it works!

Hi,
Which OS are you using 5XP, Me, 2000) If you're using XP SP2, your
problem could be the service pack 2 that is causing troubles to the
IEEE1394 interface. I've the same problem and I still didnt fix it.
Good luck...

Thanks for your suggestions. I am using XP, but I don't know if I have a
service pack. How can I find out? Also, I did already try using the other
port and it doesn't work either. Can I uninstall and reinstall a driver or
card that came with the computer (an HP)? If so I will try that. I'm really
wanting to edit some film by early October!

OK, I did a system recovery and that thing still won't work. Any ideas?????
Now my audio hardward and modem are not being found, and Word was
uninstalled, but the Showbiz editing program came back to life. However it
doesn't matter because my firewire connection is still not working. It
definitely knows the camera is there and even knows exactly which model I
have connected.
Please help?
