I've tried copying several media files to my IPAQ 5550 but every time I try
and open them with Media Player I either get an error about a license not
being found and to re-copy them using Windows Media Player or the file type
isn't recognized (mpeg). What file types are supported by Pocket Media
Player? And what is the best way to copy them to my device? Right now I just
use explorer...

I suggest using betaplayer instead (http://betaplayer.corecodec.org/). It's
a free player that supports all kinds of filetypes. I haven't been able to
play any kind of video with the built-in mediaplayer, but betaplayer
supports them all.

I've downloaded it but it still doesn't recognize (mpeg, avi, asf) files,
where do I get the encoders for it? Did I miss something, or do I need to
convert all my files to a certain format?

Strange, it works fine on my Axim X3i. You could try converting your files
into DivX with the free PocketDivXEncoder (http://divx.ppccool.com/). It'll
also make most video-files a lot smaller.

Windows media player for your pocketpc will play windows media files (wmv,
wma) and mp3 files, it does not support avi, or mpg videos. for those
files you can try the betaplayer as suggested or pocketmvp (also freeware)
or you can use windows media encoder (free from microsoft) to convert your
video files to windows media format.
You should be able to copy these or any files using explorer. If you are
getting an error regarding licenses then you need to... A) if your burning
the music yourself, turn of the copy protection in whatever program you are
using to rip the CD's, if you are purchasing the music online then I believe
you need to use windows media player on the desktop to copy the files to
your device (while it is in its cradle) however, I believe they will only
play if stored in the main memory of your device and not if you copy them to
a storage card. the work around for this is to burn your purchased files to
a CD and then re-rip them to your computer without the copy protection and
that will let you play them from your storage card.
