I have windows XP home with all the current updates
provided by windows and media player 10. I have a wide
sceen lcd display. When i play any video it comes up in
what looks like a 1 to 1 ratio, but is not stretched the
sides of the immage are cut off. what could be the cause
of this?

What DVD software did you install? The DVD codec is not provided by
Microsoft so you must have thord party codec installed? The aspect ratio is
controlled by the codec. Some mpeg2 codecs do not work well with certain
modes. Try disbling/enabling overlay setting from
Tools->Options->Performance>Hardware Acceleration.
