How to know what Pocket PC Edition a pda is running with W..

Hi:

I have a toshiba e355 running Windows Mobile 2003, but I do not know what edition it is running: Pocket PC Shell, Premier or Professional Edition.

The About screen says: OS Version: 4.20.1081 (Build 13100)

I asked this because i could not find IPSec/L2TP options to configure a VPN connection with this Toshiba e355. So according to the article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/libr...
maybe my toshiba has Pocket PC Shell or Professional, because this feature is supported with Premier Edition only.

Is there an article, somewhere, that explains how to know what edition a pda is running with these numbers in the About screen?

Thank you in advance for your help.

That means 2003, and answering another question, that .1081 is
probably a Toshiba specific build.

The e355 is Premium, which basically means the best of everything and
is only lacking extras found in "Phone Edition" devices.

Start|Settings|Connections|Connections|Edit VPN Servers (or Add VPN
Server)

Edit an existing one or add a new one. The first dialog box is VPN
type - IPSec/L2TP or PPTP.

Thank you for your answer.

I have followed the steps that you recommend: Start|Settings|Connections|Connections|Edit VPN Servers (or Add VPN
Server):

When I choose Edit VPN Servers I can see the name of the connection and the Server, then I choose edit this connection and I can see/modify the definitions that I have for the fields Name and Host name/IP, but I can not see any field or option to select IPSec/L2TP or PPTP. If I see the help for this screen on the pda, it explains the options IPSec/L2TP and PPTP, but they never appear on my pda.

When I choose Add VPN Server, I can write the Name of the connection and Host name or IP but, again, the options for IPSec/L2TP and PPTP never appear, and they are explained too in the related help on this pda.

I appreciate your help to know where the problem is.

Regards

Are you sure you have a 2003 device? This sounds like a 2002 device.
What is the model?

If it is a 2003 device, do you have a third party VPN client on it?
Something could be corrupting the PPC VPN dialog box and perhaps a
hard reset is in order.

Yes, my pda is a Toshiba e355 (Model: No: PD350U-0002RR) and it runs Windows PocketPC 2003 as it is specified in the documentation from Toshiba. Besides, it has a logo on the pda that says: New! PocketPC 2003. It does not mention anywhere in the documentation what PocketPC edition it is.

Following you will find some of the information that it shows in the About screen:

System RAM Size: 63.19MB

===============

The models e350 and e355 are the same from the hardware point of view. The model e355 comes with an extra CD with an utility to show pictures in the pda, it is the only difference between them, according to Toshiba, and they both run Windows PocketPC 2003.

I do not have a third party VPN client on it. I am configuring it, using the configuration procedure that it brings the operatyng system with this pda.

I have made a hard reset, thinking as you, that maybe something was corrupted. But after it, the options IPSec/L2TP and PPTP do not appear on my pda, yet.

What else can I check in order to solve this problem?

Again, thank you very much for your interest.

Interesting. Your ABOUT data confirms you definitely have a 2003
device. Call Toshiba. It is *possible* they left the VPN configuration
stuff out for some reason, but I couldn't fathom why that would be.
Anyone else have a e355 to look at?

Hi:

I have contacted Toshiba regarding these missing options, but they gave me this mediocre answer:

"Dear Sir: We are sorry but we do not support configuring the PDA for use with ANY VPN's it is out of scope."

Ideas?

If it isn't there after a hard reset, either demand a refund or
escalate in customer service with a phone call. VPN is supported by
the Pocket PC OS no matter which edition - phone, premium, etc. The
person you talked to is just too lazy to deal with it.

mediocre? It seems factual and to the point. Just because it doesn't suit
you doesn't make it mediocre.

Perhaps you should consider your ability to choose a machine that does what
you want, or your ability to ask relevant and pertinent questions before
buying as mediocre.
