media player classic plays DVDs, WMP9 doesnt!

after installing a fresh Windows XP + SP2 + k-lite codec pack, i tried
playing a DVD in windows media player 9.... and got this error:

"Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video. Try decreasing
the number of colors displayed on your monitor or decreasing the screen
resolution. For additional solutions, click More Information to access the
DVD Troubleshooter."

i tried the obvious changing the colours and resolution but it made no
difference, after some research it turns out there is either no dvd decoder
or a problem with the dvd decoder (i typed "dvdupgrd /detect" to check).

so i tried the media player classic that comes with k-lite codec pack and IT
WORKED! so that means there must be a valid dvd decoder installed?

its strange that ms provide all these dvd features with wmp but (a) neglect
to tell you they're useless without a decoder, (b) dont hide them or disable
them, (c) even more strange that the error message displayed has absolutely
nothing to do with the problem!

so how can i now get wmp9 to play dvds?

Install WinDVD or PowerDVD or other decoding software.

Media Player Classic (MPC) has built in MPEG2 decoder so it would not be
affected by any thirdparty decoder. You cna turn it off and see if it
reports the same problem as WMP9.

The codec pack you installed - although illegal - would have a codec to play
dvds, may be you need to install carefully again. (dont install everyhting).
