External Enclosure Power Does Not Work (set up problem or ..

Hello, I just bought an external enclosure for my 80GB Maxtor hard
disk, but I have trouble setting it up. I set the hard disk to be
master and connected the IDE Connector and Power Molex correctly to the
hard disk. However, when I turned on the power of the enclosure, it
does not work and the light didn't even turn on. I tried to disconnect
the power molex from the hard disk, and the power came back up, but the
Windows XP didn't recognize it and gave me a code 10 error. I felt that
I should connect the power molex back to the hard disk, but it does not
have power when I did that. I wonder if it is the problem of the
external enclosure or the hard disk. I already tried the hard disk with
another external enclosure, and it had the same problem.

Does the Maxtor work when attached internally in the PC?

Is the extrenal enclosure rated for HDs; is the power supply in it strong
enough for a HD?

That shouldnt matter with those power problems you are having.

What are you doing about power for the external enclosure ?

It needs to have its own power pack.

If it does, it may not supply enough power to spin up the drive.

Does the hard drive work when you connect it internally in a PC ?

If not it may be dead.

Thats the evidence that you are either not
supplying enough power or the hard drive is dead.

Because the hard drive isnt powered.

Correct.

Could be either, see above on how to resolve that.

Not unusual if you are attempting to power it using the
data cable. That isnt possible with a 3.5" hard drive.

It could still be the inadequate power pack if you
are using the same one with both externals.

Or the hard drive could be dead. The best test for
that last is to try in inside a PC, loose, for a quick test.
