Controller compatibility chart?

One of my Maxtor drives failed, it's Fireball 3, ATA/133 30GB, model
2F030J0. I'd like to repair it, but how do I know which controllers are
compatible?

You cannot. Another one from the same model might do it
or not. No way to tell without trying it.

All Intel mobo ATA controllers and probably most other ones too. Your
question seems odd...'repair a HD' seems an unattainable goal. The best one
can do generally is to run Maxtor diagnostics and do a full read/write
diagnostic cycle on it

Thanks Arno. I've found some matches this way, I just
thought there is a cheaper alternative...

Unfortunately these are not standardised in any way and the
manufacturers do not give out spefifications. The alternative
is to go for professional data recovery, they keep lost of
parts in storage just to find matching ones in such cases.
Of course that is not cheaper at all....

Ron, you must have misunderstood me somehow. I've already made the
diagnosis and that's failed controller - the electronic board screwed to
the bottom of the disk which is easily replaceable. This is the most
simple of possible problems, but as far as I know a simple disk failure
rarely results in lost data ... may depend on how much money you want to
put in though.

He's talking about the logic card on the drive.

It can be done with older drives than that particular one,
swap the logic card, obviously if that is what has failed.
