i tried to play an .avi file, but it said a codec was missing. gspot said
it's "ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc", and is meant for the audio. i
saw it was asked twice already, and that the suggested solution was
downloading an ac3 filter. i downloaded and installed it, but it dosen't seem
to do anything- the same problem remains, and the only ac3 executable i found
is a configuration program that i don't understand. what should i do?

It would be easier to understand your situation if you have given the name
of the codec you downloaded and installed

ffdshow http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net/
ac3filter http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/
AC3 Decompressor
http://www.free-codecs.com/downloa [...] ressor.htm

Any of these should solve your problem
