How I accidentally made XP delete my harddisks!

Hello!

I want to warn you about some behaviour of Norton Ghost and XP:

I have got several harddisks for backups that I insert into my computer
using a IDE rack whenever I need them.
When I look into Disk Management the absent backup harddisks are shown
with a red cross.

Now I needed to use Norton Ghost (Version 9.0.2.3981). It has a bug:
If you have entries with a red cross for absent harddisks in Disk
Management Nortion Ghost says:
Cannot initialize the Storage Management Engine.

The drives were absent so I thought I could delete the entries and XP
will make new entries when I would insert them again.

But when I inserted the drives later XP deleted the partions!!

Any comments?

I don't know about that exact situation but I have used a program called
"Active @ Recovery" to recover a partition I made an "oops" with. It worked
great and I recovered everything. Before I used that program I used "Easy
Recovery" but only recovered files with shortened file names, I mean I
recovered everything I wanted but some stuff had the names shortened-which
was WAY better than nothing.

Your data is likely there, but it just isn't showing up.

Partition Magic from Symantec will also recover deleted partitions. There's
also several other utilities that will recover deleted partitions. You can
find them with a google search.

As mentioned, as long as you haven't written anything to the hard drive
since the partition was deleted, everything on the partition should simply
reappear once you've 'undeleted' the partition.
