How much money is enough to live the life you want to live without working?

I had this discussion with my friends and family when I came home from Thailand. How much money is enough? Say you had $500,000 in cash would that be enough for you to live the rest of your life without working? A million? 5 million? It's kinda weird for me since I could live on an island somewhere and just spend the rest of my life diving but at the same time I dream to have a home in California, Sweden, and be able to travel. That's obviously a high set of goals I set for myself.

Mate, I'll need at least a couple and quite frankly that wont be enough because I am determined to own a few top thoroughbreds in this lifetime and they start at the $250k mark plus. Big dollars, indeed.

But, to just live and enjoy life I would think 2.5 would get me setup and invested well enough.

Crikeys, I better get saving. :D

Well its hard to say....i am 23(on Nov 10th 2005)...i SHOULD live to be about 90. I have never smoked, done illegal drugs of any kind, i almost never drink(maybe 5 drinks a year since i turned 21 on average....mostly in vegas and stuf), i am NEVER EVER sick, and i have about 8-10% body fat.

So if i got 20K a year for 70years that would be 1.4Million....
But with inflation 20K in 70years is going to be insane to live off of.

My aunt and i have talked about this. She could live on 1mill for the rest of her life easily. She is 52, had breasts cancer but is good now, she smoked for 25 years....so she doesn't expect to live much beyond 65.

I COULD live on 20K a year for the rest ofmy life but it would kind of suck, i could live on 12K a year right now...lots of roman noodles and never buying anything i dont need i COULD do it. But that would suck....I am not saying i want to buy everything in the world but what level of living are we talking here?

If i were givin 2.5million dollars i would still work because otherwise i would be very bored....i would probably work someplace for free just to dickaround.....come and go as i please. But i think something in the 3.5-4million would be best for me. (50k a year for 70years...in 70years 50k wont be a lot but you should be able to live on 50k a year without too much trouble.)

Jeez, live a little will ya'.

By your logic then I'll be lucky to scratch sixty because I've partied hard since the tender age of 18 and while I've never smoked I've surely indulged in life's naughty pleasures a touch too often.

I respect your go though. But jeez, get out there and blow your hair back because once your 20s are over its a touch trickier to doge the bullets, or so the saying goes.

Your poll doesnt make much sense because there's too many open variables that can be a determining factor: where do you want to live, what kind of home would you like to have, etc.

I'm too lazy to think up all of those myself, make choices and then come up with an answer. Just keep in mind that depending where you live and how smart your personal banker is, you have to pay income tax (income from your capital), at some places (like where I live) you'll have to pay some form of wealth tax, you need to keep up with inflation. This must be funded from the return on investments on your capital, and you can decide to start burning up your initial capital if you do not want to pass on your wealth to the next generation. Have fun doing the math. Don't forget to put some initial capital in your living arrangements. Then you can compute your spending capital on a yearly basis and see if it's enough.

Btw, if you're the type that can get it made by yourself, you won't want to live without working, work needs to be your hobby if you ever want to find yourself in such a luxurious position, and why quit with a hobby if it's fun?

*edit* I did not take into account any family capital that might already be in your (future) inheritance, and you've dropped some hints in the past that there is significant capital there. Are you trying to figure out whether it'll be enough for ya?

I know...i am a super exciting person on paper....

Every teacher in highschool thought i was stoned all the time, i was just bored with there class. I didn;t drink till i was 21....and even then i dont drink which FREAKS PEOPLE OUT!!! I drink ad it doesn't do much....i did shots with my sister on my 21st birthday....I did 15 shots and i literally felt nothing. It runs in my family....my mom is the same way. I always looked at it like this...a drink is about 4-8bucks...a coke (at a bar which they are asssholes about it) is 2bucks....its cheaper to drink coke and the sugar buzz is more then the booze.

I have gotten in a lot of trouble in highschool, i had an assigned seat in the office. I had a hall pass that neevr expired because i got sent to the office a lot. My junior year of highschool i skipped 63days of school....and passed all but one class (teacher failed me even though i had a B because she hated me) The school had a policy that if you missed more then 20 you automatically failed no matter what....i guess i found a way around that   ....

And although i haven't had sex with a million people....i dated a girl fro 7years (now broken up...from 15-22) and our clothes accidently fell off sometimes.....

I have have my fair share of trouble....i just dont do drugs and drinking does almost nothign for me.

You know having read this, I'm confident you're not that exciting off paper either. I honestly do not know whether it would be possible to enjoy a good glass of wine if you're totally insensitive to alcohol but there are many aspects to the flavor/tastes of wine, which are not all that dependend on the alcohol content. You would be able to enjoy all the great wines of the world without dulling your taste sense because of alcohol poisoning! If you're going to try it, better start upping your required capital estimates because it'll cost ya but it's worth it, trust me.

My dad drinks wine all the time....I guess i have a glass here and there....I am not too much into wine. I have found a couple i LOVE and a couple that are horrible.

I dont like warm liquids (Reds) and i dont like cool liquids either(whites) i like COLD liquids. I prefer soda...cold, carbonated, and sweet.

I guess i forgot about drinking wine because most people count drinking when they try to get a buz or something. I have gone on a couple wine tastings and i will drink a glass or two when i go to Oceanaire with my family. (5 star seafood restraunt downtown seattle....my dad knows the chef and takes me, i can't afford $170-$250 per person...i am UBERbroke.)

I would actually rather drink vodka shots....Grey Goose, Kettle One, Stoli, Absolut....i like vodka more then wine. On the rocks to get it cold and small sips to let the vodka 'bloom' in your mouth is nice....if its a good vodka.

As excited as I can get over a world class glass of wine, vodka definitely is not for me. I can't even taste it right as I'm not insensitive to alcohol. I need the liquid to flow through my mouth, spread it well all over my tongue, making sure the scents go from my mouth to my nose (from the inside) as well as directly smelling it.

I can't do that with vodka, it hurts! (I tried, believe me).

First off don't look too deeply into my poll. Everyone here is different and although a million isn't that much in California I'm sure Spitty would do more than fine with it. We all come from different places and everyone has different dreams and aspirations so maybe Spitty is the one in here who wants $5M+.

I'm working. I'm not really planning on so much inheriting anything but I am working to build up a business so that's where I'll get my money from.

I think the real question that some of you missed is how much money would you need right now or in the near future to live happily? Sure you can still work if you really want to for fun but in my case if I had enough money I would spend the rest of my life travelling or living in different parts of the world.

Having a lot of money when you're 80 is a bit different than having it when you're younger. Don't think about it so much as how much do you want when you retire at 70. It's a matter of how much you would need now to retire and be happy.

The alcohol doesn't make me drunk but i can SURELY taste it....thats also another reason i dont drink most of the time. I NEVER drink beer...it tastes what i imagine aligator piss to taste like and hard A usually tastes so much like rubbing alcohol that i can barely swallow.

I am super sensative to the taste of alcohol.....good vodkas have a alcohol taste to them but its hard to explain why i like them.....probably because its cold and smooth.

Dude, you have Mack and Jacks African Ale up there. You don't realize how lucky you are!

Reply to dhlucke

Uh....i also have starbucks within 15ft of me at all time and i dont drink coffee, i also have boeing up here and i dont buy planes, and we have unshaven hippie girls...but i am not dipping in that engine to check the oil levels....

My dad Loves Fat Tire, Moose Drool and a couple others....

I used to live in PA and people there go APESHIT over Yingling Lager.

Even if I had $40,000,000 I would still work for a while. I would leave my current position and go back to an old job I had earlier. I would man the customer services desk and tell it like it is. After about 2 hours, group security and police dragging me away then I would retire. Seriously a few mil and you could live happily, the more you have the more of your loved ones and friends can live happier.

Oh, man. Jeez, there you go. Here I was thinking this gentleman enjoys Earl Grey Tea with scrumpets and then you let go with what sounds to me to be a most tortuous teenage growth period. Mate, I wasn't much for school but I rarely broke the rules.

Well, you learn something new everyday here and thanks for sharing.

Now as for the part about 15 shots not doing anything for you then my friend, I suggest you knock back 15 schaltruce/chaltruce or whatever they're called. Its pure fire contained within a liquid and mate it will put you into space.

I know I wont live as full a life as I could have if I'd abstained from the booze etc. but I'm certainly not displeased with the way things have turned out.

You know what you need picxxx: sex parties. Just swing by your local SP and start jiving with two tarts and bingo! it will be just like high school except you'll be the one dishing out the punishment. :P

In middle school there wasn't a localized detention....so i had to report to every teacher individually. So if i pissed off my science teacher i would have 45 min with him after school...well i was such a nice kid that i spent 2-3 hours DAILY with teachers. I sevred them in the order i got them, first period teacher, then 2nd then 3rd and so on....lol

Interesting detentions....all in 7th and 8th grade.....

Science teacher made me correct tests, build models for class, fix wobbly desks, stir the compost bin (yummy!!), and all of this was a joke...i ended up with a desk in the hallway setup so i could see the board but not the students to distract them....

Math Teacher made me join the math team. She made me come to her class when the math team was meeting and would make me explain problems to them when they missed them. I hated it, the kids on the math team try real hard but weren't all that great at thinking outside the box. I bascially tutored them but never competed....it was either basketball or math team....tough call. I also corrected tests and actually a couple times created quizes for the next day.

Gym teacher was also the track coach and i had to do the daily workout for 45min with whichever group i wanted, distance, sprinters, or throwers. I usually ran windsprints because it helped with basketball and baseball. I also had to do rediculous things like wash and fold towels, sanitize the weight room (Gross!), and my personal favorite....shag golf balls in an open feild the gym teach practiced his irons on.

Art teacher wanted me to scrub the tables, chairs, and all that becuase they were filthy from paint, clay, or gum. But she was the easiest to get out of....it waseither 45min of DT or 200pushups, whichever came first. After 2 weeks i could knock out 200 pushups in about 5min.

I spent most of middle school in the hallway or DT.
highschool i didn't get in as much trouble but i was still a huge pain in the butt....except my senior year. I didn't miss a single day of school, no DT, nothing but great grades and worked a job 50-60hours a week after school and weekends.

Good to see you, Rob...*shines right-hand knuckles on shirt lapel*... yesss sirrreee, there's nothing like your traditional 3-way slam to get a man out of bed at the crack of dawn to exercise for the last two months.

You know how it is: you either make it happen or some other joker lands the score and thats a lesson that took me 9 years of hard boozing to work out so I reckon I was deserving that one night of bliss.

Just my luck though, the lasses latched onto another groover after me and I'm out of the scene...

I did actually try it on with sisters, but I got told to sod off otherwise I'd get none out of the one sister I was plugging. I'd had the other sister not long before, and they were a pair of dirty bints so I fancied my chances. Alas, no..... :?

I want either a 'normal person' cash flow or an insane amount of money so as to influence world events.

Having five million is neither here nor there. You get all the decadance and degregation that comes with wealth, but you don't have enough for anything of really awesome proportions.

Also, pickxx, with all the pollution in the air and shit they put in our food and water, guesstimating your age like that is completely futile.

I'm not sure a good beer is worse for your health than the E2xx they have in soda in any case.

Not the title of the thread. The title of the poll. Was just wondering why the Hamburglar was going off with his "Your poll doesnt make much sense because there's too many open variables that can be a determining factor: where do you want to live, what kind of home would you like to have, etc. " The idea of "enough to live the life you want to live without working" seems to pretty much cover everything.

He didnt change anything as far as I can remember. However, when you try to establish what amount is enough, it is rather important to state where you want to live and how you want to live (other than just not working), and neither was specified.

I don't see how it's rather important to state that at all. He's just asking how much. For whatever lifestyle you want, regardless of what it is how much is enough to you? The poll isn't about where everybody wants to live, that part's up to each. The poll is just about an amount. If you haven't decided those things in your own mind, that's for you to do. The poll makes perfect sense as it is, though. Save us the partypooping.
