Could a router with a usb print server be used for other usb functions
?
On some routers such as the SMC Barricade BR14U Router there is a
built in USB print server.
Since this is a standard USB port is there any way this USB connection
could be put to other uses - such as sharing files off a USB flash
drive or USB external hard drive ?

Not that I'm aware of.

Printer servers aren't always good at supporting printers let alone other
devices. For example many don't support the back channel (eg ink level
monitors or paper out). Never buy a printer server without checking that it
supports your printer first!.

I forgot to add...

"...and how well it supports your printer"
