you know whats interesting...people are making these apps to bring back the start menu. In a years time most new games will run directly from the Metro UI....making these retroUI apps pointless...unless your still using old software.

Do you just what, completely ignore every game you've bought that's more than a year old? I don't.

When Windows 9 comes out and the Metro UI is actually polished and functional, I'll be upgrading to that, and using games in Metro then.

(Oh, and OP? Love the list, thanks!)

Hi :)

You are precisely missing the point here....

All that effort to provide a proper start menu for 8......

It shows HOW MUCH demand there is for it...

And even more important HOW WRONG MS got it by not providing it...

All the best Brett :)

Has all these been tested to make sure there are no bugs/viruses? The last thing anyone wants is to have something go wrong with their computer. :)

+1

MS did get it wrong by not providing the legacy start menu, i have seen so many people willing to spend the $5 to get it back :)

It probably wouldn't seem practical for someone that already has Win 7 to get Win 8.. but it is their call & it is good for those who are stuck with Win 8, if they are forced to use Win 8, they do have some software to bring it back to make the OS work better for them.

Great post Cy. Have been using StartIsBack myself. The real deal. For the uninitiated - that's the real Microsoft code and the real Windows 7 Start Menu resurrected from the dead by Russian developer Stanislav Zinukhov known on the MSFN/MDL forums as Tihiy.

It's not a Start Menu replicator unlike all the others. It is the real McCoy. Hence, it integrates beautifully with Win8 and makes it perform more like a super-fast Win7 installation. No lag and no 'Metro Flash' at startup. :)

Pardon me if I sound like a StartIsBack evangelist, but at $1 per lifetime license, it is by far the best $1 you'll have spend on any tech product in your life :D

BTW, Couldn't agree more with Brett and DarkSable :D

Did you even bother to read my list, it's obvious that you didn't or you would've seen that is already listed in the FREE section!

This is a great list, very well done.

Next step is to review each one....! :)

However, I can say you all the trouble...use Classic Shell...it's EXACTLY what you want from a start menu...it's really really good!

And before I get flamed for using W8 with a start menu....I use Metro too...I just like that I now have a choice to use either, rather than being forced to only have Metro

I would recommend that if you can get a copy of W8 that you do so, use it, get used to it, and the way it does things...you will be pleasently surprised I think.

I don't review, plus I don't use Windows 8, even though I did buy it and use it for 2 weeks, the bugs got to me, so I went back to Windows 7.

Also, StartIsBack uses the leftover bits & pieces of the Start Menu in Windows 8, so you basically get a native Start Menu that doesn't run as a service like all the others.
